I've been running YDL on a powerbook connected to a Linksys LAN for
years, no problem. But when connected to a different LAN, with a newer
router using mac addresses for security, most programs startups are
delayed by ten seconds when ethernet is up. Haven't isolated which
system calls those delayed programs make. So far I've identified those
programs as either Gnome-based or network-oriented. (I need ncftp to
be very responsive for my work - can't handle a ten second delay) Only
a few basic programs like cp are not delayed. I'd guess Gnome
calculator is hanging on Gnome init which probably looks briefly at the
network even though the calculator doesn't use it. Any pointers on
program startup delays when connected to network? <br>
