unable to mount cd (iBook 2 2001)

I just installed YDL 2.2 and it seems to be fine with one exception: I am 
unable to mount the cdrom drive. I can't eject it from the console. Nor can
I eject it by using the mouse (fn-f12, eject). The same applies for all my 
attempts to mount the device. The error I get is

"mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device"

My cd drive is a toshiba dvd/cdr. 

Any help greatly appriciated.
