Graphic display problem solved

Hi, newbie here.  Responding to myself, no less.

Very simple solution.

Start Linux in text mode, then log on as root.  Enter "setup" to run 
that routine in text mode.  Select configure and use "failsafe" to 
automatically do the monitor deed.  Exit to command line mode and 
enter "startx".

It works.
