6100 + Newer G3 + YDL 2.2/2.4 = Happiness? (Was: 6100 and 2.2)

Steve,

Yes, there are a few NewerG3 upgraded PM6100s working with YDL2.2. Etsushi
Kato's kernels work fine even with the AV Card pass-through. Don't use the
Newer extension during the installation process, though. The YDL installer
doesn't work very well with the MkLinux booter. When you get to the package
selection point you have to choose either the Base install or Home/Office,
make sure to check the box for manual package selection (the installer keeps
looking for apt if you don't), and wait for forever (maybe 6 hrs.) for it to
install. Sometimes it hangs and you have to start over (don't reformat the
drive, of course) to finish the installation. When finished, I booted back
into the Mac partition and replaced the Mach Kernel+installer with Etsushi's
MachKernel-RTNETLINK-2.4.6pre3, changed the lilo.conf file to point to my
root partition, and booted into the new system. After shutting down again,I
replaced that Mach Kernel with Etsushi's MachKernel-2.4.19-rc3-020722 and
was able to put my Newer G3 extension back into the Mac system folder
successfully and boot up with the G3 card.

I also had quite a time getting X to work. Had to use Etushi's version of
Xautoconfig to get my screen working correctly (remove the installed version
first). That's also available at:

ftp://ppc.linux.or.jp/pub/users/ekato/nubus-pmac/YDL2.2/

>From there, I got Kppp working with my Global Village modem and was able to
script IP routing and masquerading. Works great. Now, I want to get my
Epson Stylus Color 600 working but apparently the serial port speed can't be
set to the required 921600 bps so I may have to find another printer that
works. Want to try gimp-print with cups first to see if that works before I
buy another old serial printer. Anyone know anything about installing
gimp-print?

I know this rambles a bit but if you have any particular questions about
what I did, ask away.

Tom
