Bin file problems.

Hey all I'm totaly new to linux but need to learn it for a job i have 
this summer and well I've always wanted to anyway. Just a quick question 
about files with a .bin suffix.. how do you expand them. I downloaded 
java from the sun site and its in a .bin file that I have no idea what 
to do with.

Secondly I  know linux doesnt like HSF+ partitions but is there a way 
you can get os x to see and alter the files on the linux partition
