xwindow

hi
i've some problem with xwindow
the system works fine but the only widow manager i con work with is KDE
i've tried Gome but it doesn''t start

i've tried to reinstall gnome and gtk libs but nothing changed.

i even tried windowmaker and it says "can't open display" too
i know they 're well installed couse the system recognizes them (menus, 
switchdesk ecc..)
i even tried to reinstall x but nothing changed

what else can i make?
