modem and shutdown questions

Jesse, I am having the same modem problem you are having and have entered
the DNS for Earthlink, but have not checked if mine are out-of-date. Pulled
them from the TCP/IP control panel in MacOS, which works fine. Still the
"unknown host" problem.
I think the actual solution is in the modem string. I used LinuxPPC two
years ago and remember that I had to change the string as used in KPPP.
Can't remember the string or the source, but once I locate it I will post. I
don't believe the ATZ is sufficient for proper initialization
