X11 / Monitor resolution - depht - frequency confusion

Running Yellowdog 2.3 on a G4 733 Quicksilver / Gforce 2 MX connected to
an Hitachi CM766ET

(this Monitor does *not* match any of the Hitachis on the list presented 
during
the installation - process, choosing a similar modell ends up in an 
error when starting X)

The monitor resolution ranges from  640x480  to  1200x1600 at 75Hz.
The h/v frequenzy is 31-96/50-180.

When i enter the specs taken from datasheet in the "advanced" - section 
of xconfigurator,
i get an error about "... respawning to fast...delayed for five 
minutes.." on starting X.

When i choose the "failsafe"-option, i get a working 640 x 480, 256 
colour screen at a very low frequency

When i choose 800 x 600/85Hz i get a working screen at a low frequency 
(bleeding eyes)

When i choose 1024x768/75Hz i get a screen w. decent colours and 
frequency but the screen is larger than the size of the monitor so i 
have to "scroll" it up and down which is really
annoying... -) .

Does any of the experts feel like bringing some light into this affair ? 
Any advice is highly appreciated.
