eth%%d: GMAC PHY not responding !

Hello all,
eth0 fails at startup ("no ip info") with the above message in the log.
Had netatalk working with mol but have done something to lose appletalk.
Not able to activate eth0 using the network control panel either.
Would someone pls. tell me how I can get the eth0 interface working again.
The config files don`t appear to have changed recently.
Any advice much appreciated.
