Not quite. As I wrote earlier, you do use disk utility, but you format
it not as HFS, nto as HFS+, not as UNIX, but rather as "free space" (in
some later versions this is called "unallocated", but I presume you'll
figure that out). If you need Disk Utility instructions, feel free to
email me or get info from Apple's knowledge base.

Bottom line is you DONT want it formatted, just partitioned. YDL does
the formatting.

After using the OS X disk utilities to format the disk into a Unix file
system, because "undefined" is not an option and HFS isn't working, no
matter what I do, the install crashes.

Autopartition .... big long gobbly gook message which it tells me to save
to a FLOPPY and then copy and paste in an email to terra soft.

Disk Druid ... same damn thing.

---

At this point, fuck it, I'm going to try for a dual boot system and see if I
have any luck with that. It's just that OS X is going to be a 3 hour long
install on this imac.

Aha! And I just found "free space" under the Partition Tab in the Disk
Utility menu. (Where I had not gone before because the YDL book says
that using the Apple Partiton tool is a bad thing.)

Thank you ... this may get somewhere after all!

Exactly where I told you it was in my step-by-step instructions.
Congratulations.

1) Thank you everybody for being generous offering advice.

After being directed to the partition menu on the Mac OS Disk Utitlies, I was able to partition (not format) the disk as undefined.

The install went smooth enough -- but I never did get a GUI installer.

The only problem now is that I've got a constant low level buzzzz coming out of the speakers. The buzz gets worse when I move the mouse. How do I fix this? :)

Once again, thank you everybody. I hear again and again that Linux Alpha Geeks are snotty, unhelpful folk. You all are utterly bastard groovy.

(The mouse in question is a logitech 2 button + Scroll wheel usb optical mouse.)

How do you restart the x server.
I changed my display settings and now I have a low resolution and low color rate.
Also, I have a graphical login, how do I get a command line?
Thanks for your time.
Austin.

Subject: 17" iMac G4 - how do I configure screen?
Date: Sun, 03 Aug 2003 09:24:41 +0000
Reply-To: yellowdog-newbie@lists.terrasoftsolutions.com

Hi,

I have an iMac G4 800MHz with a 17" LCD screen. I have twice installed YDL 3.0,
and once Mandrake 9.1, but never gotten the monitor to work in any sort of GUI.
In YDL 3.0, during installation, I can actually select the iMac LCD 17" monitor
(and of course I did), but it still doesn't work when I try to start the GUI.
Either it gives an error and says the screen failed or something, or it starts
and the screen shows a bunch of intricate, colorful, patterned graphical
garbage, somewhat like those "hidden image" optical illusion posters. I've even
gotten to the point, when this garbage is displayed, of logging in and being
startled by the rock-beat music jingle that presumably greets you when you've
logged on. So YDL thought it was working, but my screen was still unintelligible.

For video card, during installation, it defaults to one of the GeForces, with
16MB RAM. My first install, I went with that; my second install, I chose 64MB
RAM (which is what I have).

I also tried editing the /etc/X11/XF86Config file, as recommended on the YDL
website, by adding in the "Monitor" section:

Option "CrtcNumber" "0"
Modeline "1440x900" 129.73 1440 1480 1616 1848 900 903 906 936 -HSync -VSync

I tried it with those lines, and then again with those lines but removing the
existing entries for HSync or VRefresh or whatever they were. After each change,
I logged out of root and back into root, and then tried "startx" again, but
invariably it either gave me the error and returned me to the shell, or it
started the GUI as if it were working when all I saw was screen garbage that
changed subtly when I typed or moved the mouse.

At this point, I don't know what to do - please advise. The Mandrake Linux
installation was even less successful, plus it screwed over my partitions so
that my Mac partitions have apparently vanished (at least from the sight of the
YDL 3.0 installer). Everything was backed up, but I'd like to get this fixed
ASAP so I have a usable computer again, whether it's Linux (my preference) or
Mac OS X (back to the drawing board). I'm writing this from my PC which I
thought I'd never need to lay my hands on again.

If the specific error messages would be helpful, let me know and I'll post them.

Thanks a lot,
Marc Macauley

Hi Marc,

Your description was completely parallel to my own experience,
struggling to get a usable video display up & running--and I sure
thought I had a solution for you until I saw that you had already tried
making the change
Option "CrtcNumber" from "1" to "0"
--it was that change that was the charm in my case & finally got me a
normal display. . . . . Hmmmm, actually, I just noticed that you
wrote that the above line was added to your >>"Monitor"<< section. In
my Config file, that file is in the >>"Device"<< section; and that is
where it seemed to work its magic for me. You might play around with
that.

There are two other lines in the /etc/X11/XF86Config you might look at:
In the "Monitor" section, check the 'Option "DPMS"' line. During my
attempts to resolve my prob, I "commented out" that line, like so:
#Option "DPMS"
Also in the "Monitor" section I added the line
Option "FlatPanel"--though truly, that addition didn't seem as
crucial as the other 2 referenced above.

Hope the above will be of some assistance. I will try to post an copy
of my entire /etc/X11/XF86Config file later today.

Good luck! --Harvey

Hello again, Marc: Just wanted to clarify that my model iMac is exactly
the same as yours & that it was YDL 3.0 I installed. Again, good luck.

Hi all

I have figured out why my install freezes, I think: The installer isn't
seeing my harddrive. I discovered this when trying to in stall Debian
and the partition table showed no partitions. In Open Firmware, it also
shows no partitions. Any ideas?
