enabling L2 cache

I'm running YDl 3.0 on a 6500/250 box, with no G3 upgrade card. 
Needless to say it's sloooow.  I checked proc/cpuinfo and my L2 cache
does not appear to be running.  Does anyone know how to enable L2
cache?  I know how-to with a G3 card, but not without.
