can't startx on Apple Studio Display 17" CRT

Hi,
I can't get YDL to startx on my dual-800 with GeForce3 to an Apple
Studio 17" CRT.
I successfully installed it, and selected Text Login, which works OK.
Xautoconfig wrote a file to /etc. But no matter how I try
tinkering with that file, I can't get 'startx' to work.
Any help, please?
Or can someone suggest a search string to use for searching
the archives for an answer? I have looked, and I haven't seen
anything yet.
