install java

Hello all,
               after a number of repartitions & installs have got ydl 2.3=
(cd)=20
running on 750 iBook.
No matter which browser I try, parts of some web pages (usually those tha=
t=20
require login) are missing - "confirm, enter" buttons & links.
Used apt-get & updated all, enabled java everywhere & still no go.
Coincidentally, some mac software I`ve been using has a linux counterpart=
 & in=20
tying to set it up discoverd I need the latest jre.
Downloaded j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin from the "sun" site  & tried =
to=20
install:-

[raiyza@tpg raiyza]$ ls -l j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin

j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin

directory
[root@tpg raiyza]#file j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin
j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin: Bourne shell script text executable


Iknow this is basic stuff but can`t move on untill I can access the net=20
properly.
I also remeber seeing somewhere a  messge like " your browser does not su=
pport=20
frames - update" in Mozilla I think.
Any advice as to where I am going wrong, would be much appreciated.
