first time install [which package]

I have a 2GB drive i want to install YDL onto.

I want to have core unix dev tools (perl, vi, pthreads, gcc, java, etc) but 
I don't need gui development tools.

What package would be the best?

If I do a simple one with x11 and just install all the other packages I need 
is this the best option?

I would like to have a gui with the basics such as web browser, pine and 
stuff.
