configuring Rage 128 on 9500

I am trying to configure another ATI card, after giving up on a Mach 64GX 
with anything other than fbdev at 640x480.

I have a 9500 with a fresh install of YDL 2.3 and 320 MB RAM. The video 
card is ATI Rage 128 on PCI with 16 MB VRAM.

I have chosen r128 as the driver; I'm trying to launch at 1024x768 @ 75.  I 
have identified the device as "ATI r128".

At startx, all I am getting is a black screen. It is not even getting back 
to the console to tell me where it is screwing up.  A look at the var log 
indicates it stops running somewhere in the searching of the PCI bus.

Any help?
