Freeze while transferring install image

Hi, folks.

I've recently taken on maintenance for a network of rather aged Macs,
the newest being a blue & white G3 that's their AppleShare IP server.

It's fallen to me to add some new services to their world, and I'd
like to do it using YDL 3.0 on a beige 266 MHz G3 (with the original
Rev 1 mobo) w/ 64MB RAM and a 4GB hard drive. (It's a non-profit org,
so I'm trying not to spend any money on hardware.)

I partitioned the drive, with 400MB for MacOS and the rest for YDL,
reinstalled MacOS8.5 (hey, it was handy) and and used BootX to bring up
the installer. No problem so far; I'm very familiar with installing
RedHat, and YDL has the same installer interface.

Great, off I go, setting partitions, selecting packages, and hitting the
button.

All seems fine until I get to the point where it's "Transferring install
image to hard drive..." The graphic meter gets to about 5/8ths of the
way across, and everything freezes. No mouse, no keyboard reset, nothing
but a power cycle gets it to respond.

Has anybody else run into this in the installation? Is there a workaround?
Many thanks.
