how do you use rescue mode?

first of all, what kind of machine are you on?
if it's on old world , then using the kernel options window, enter the
instructions there.
if it's a new world mac, then pressing c while booting , should boot you
from the cd, not sure if it boots into a prompt or it automatically
tries
to load the installer, but i think you can interrupt it while loading, and
then it should give you the option to go into rescue mode.
