KPPP error 15 (pppd timeout)

Here's a newbie question about configuring KPPP.

I just installed YDL 3.0 and have run into my first problem when trying
to connect to my campus ppp server. The KPPP dialer quits after
successful early negotiations with the server with a pppd timeout error.
The log shows an error 15, but no other suggestions.

I am able to make a ppp connection successfully through the Network
Configuration app under System Settings.After setting up the modem
device there, I can 'activate' it - it then dials the server and
everything works fine. In fact, I am sending this message now using this
very ppp connection.

Any ideas why the pppd quits with KPPP?
