Sound problem

I have a question regarding YDL 3.0
When I log in as my ordinary user account, the sound driver for some 
reason does not load, so I get no startup up sound effects, nor 
anything once I am in.
If I log in as root, everything works as expected. I don't recall 
changing any settings after creating the ordinary user account.
Where should I look, in order to find what is going on?
