Can't install on MDD PowerMac

Okay, I'm trying to install 3.0 on a MDD PowerMac (2002), dual 1GHz. The CD
boots, but when I try to install (in graphical or safe mode), it hard
freezes (cursor blinks a few seconds then stops) while still showing the
text startup info. The last two lines of text are

Running install...
Running /sbin/loader

Notable hardware: Radeon 9000 (OEM) video card; it has a second hard drive,
a DVD-ROM (in addition to the SuperDrive) and a third-party ethernet card. I
have tried disconnecting each of these three and the same thing happens.

I know some people are running on this model and my video card is supported.
Any thoughts?
