Login problem

Hi. I'm a brand new linux user and I'm having problems logging in. When I try to log in I enter my username, press enter, and then I can't enter my password. Whatever I do, it doesn't show the *'s or anything. The install went fine and the keyboard seems to work fine. My Computer: 1998 iMac 233Mhz G3 4GB Hard Drive. Thanks, any help will be appreciated.
