Beige PowerMac G3 problem

Hi, =20

I've spent a couple of days trying to install YDL 3 on my beige PowerMac
G3/300 desktop, Rev 3. I upgraded the CPU some time ago to an XLR8
G4/500. I have a SCSI external hard drive attached. Currently I have
one internal hard drive, and my internal disk formatting is: a 7.9 gig
Mac OS Extended partition for OS X; 14 gigs of unallocated free space in
partition 2; and 6 gigs of Mac OS Standard for OS 9. On my external
SCSI. I have two partitions of Mac OS Extended.

No luck at all with the install. In fact, my whole system is screwy
now. I'll probably have to reformat and start again. You'll recall
that with the beige G3s, OSX must be installed in the first partition of
the hard drive, and that partition cannot exceed 8 gigs. =20

I had earlier tried to install YDL (and then SuSe) on my external SCSI
with different formatting schemes, obviously -- no luck with that
either.

Is this a CPU issue? Is it even possible to install YDL in anything but
the master hard drive first partition? Would putting OSX on a second,
slave hard drive work (sounds pretty unlikely).

Thanks for any help. I'm out of ideas.
