how to extract packages from .tgz

for tar:

tar -xzf <filename>
-x is Expand
-z is Gzip
-f is used to set a filename.

As for antivirus...come on, you are using a Linux OS, on a PPC even. I 
doubt you will ever have a problem with viri.
