Screen resolution

Hello, everybody.
I am new in the Apple/ Mac computers world. A friend of mine gave me a 
G3 PowerMac. But I had to use a PC monitor, Samsung SyncMaster 763MB. 
The video card is ATI Rage 128 with 16 Mb memory. I installed YDL 3.0 
(since I am a linux fan), and everything went smooth. But I can not 
change the resolution to 1024x768. It is always at 832x624. I tried to 
change using the graphical tool, I also changed to XF86Config and I 
wrote 1024x768, but it doesn't work. The monitor is selected as 
SyncMaster (data get from "probe monitor"; this type of monitor -763MB- 
is not listed in the list with monitors). I tried with generic monitor 
with 1024x768, but no result.
