Matt, i agree with Norberto that YDL on ppc is not the best way to learn
linux. i had one year's experience with linux on x86 and have now
learnt enough that i am more or less managing with YDL on my iBook
(two week's experience so far). i notice that there are less web
pages and less forums and mailing lists devoted to linux on ppc,
and i notice that what is probably the most polished and
user friendly distro (YDL) is a year or so behind Redhat
in terms of hardware support for the typical machines it's going
to be used on. things are moving fast so a year behind is bad news.
but who knows if you try again a year from now...

being new to XF86Config myself I have no idea whether someone else's
"wrong" XF86Config will work for you. however I do think it's a good
idea to try a live linux cdrom since my experience is that
knoppix-MiB-ppc has better hardware support and more state-of-the-art
software generally than YDL. it is designed to work on almost any
hardware without intervention by the user, a different philosophy to YDL.

you can find knoppix-MiB-ppc here:

http://www.bouissou.net/knoppix-mib/doc-html/Knoppix-Mib.html

and there is some discussion going on about how to use it here:

http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3646#16978

(a thread on knoppix on mac)

Also I would recommend to read an elementary book on linux like the ebook
The Linux Cookbook by Michael Stutz (you can find it free on the web).
And I would second Norberto's advice to buy a second hand pc and try
linux on that first, even, you could try knoppix on it (the original
x86 version).
