If you have a two or three button mouse, then right-click on the Trash 
icon. One of the options will be to empty the trash.

If you only have an Apple one-button mouse, then move your mouse over 
the Trash icon, and click on the F12 key. You will see the same options 
as if you had a two-button mouse.
