Being a newbie, I don't know the answer to your question -- sorry! 
Perhaps the yellowdog-general list will have better answers. However, 
Terra Soft has a Web page discussing pmud:

The command "/etc/rc.d/init.d/pmud status" should echo something like 
"pmud (pid 604) is running. . . ." (The low process ID suggests to me 
that pmud started relatively early in the startup process.)

Maybe something on that page will suggest an answer to you.
