Gnome Sound?

How do I setup Gnome sound in order to listen to MP3s and CDs? I followed the 
KDE-centric directions on the YDL support page and (from KDE) was at least 
able to hear the tone when I tried to detect my sound card. I've tried using 
XMMS to play an MP3, but no sound can be heard -- even though the volume and 
speaker settings are up.

As far as I've gotten with Gnome is typing "esd" and hearing a tone. I've 
enabled the sound server, yet XMMS says the aRTS sound server cannot connect.
