Display Color Problems

Hi,

You all might remember me from the last time I posted here, but anyway,
this time I'm having troubles getting the right amount of colors on my
display. At first when I installed YDL the XF86 wouldn't start, but
then I found a workaround in the installation guide PDF. I figured out
that if I do an "Xautoconfig" in the terminal before launching XF86,
then I could actually get into the XF86 environment.

Only problem is that doing this puts me into 1280x1024 resolution at
256 colors. When I'm in OS X, I can easily get into 1280x1024
resolution in "Millions of Colors", and every time I try to change the
amount of colors in the display preferences to thousands or millions, I
wind up breaking the XF86 module, forcing me to do an "Xautoconfig"
again, thus resetting the amount of colors to 256.

I've checked the YDL website to see if my video card (ATI Rage 128 Pro)
is supported, and the website says that it supports up to 24-bit, or
thousands of colors. Would reinstalling the OS perhaps solve this?

Thank you for your help.
