Sound on an Ibook

It seems that sound is an issue on some of the iBooks.  I have a clamshell,
and I too cannot play cd's.  The fix suggested earlier seemed all to
simplistic, but I tried it nonetheless, and lo and behold: nothing.  Both
XMMS and KsCD detect a playable audio cd, but no sound.  I do have KDE
sounds, and the card is recognized, so that is not the issue.  There is a
line in the fstab to correctly mount the cdrom, but I can't figure out how
to get the thing to play.  I really need this to work, because this is the
machine I write on all of the time, and unlike a lot of people (I have no
idea who they are!) I can't afford an iPod.  Thanks ahead of time.
