You'll need to be root to do this - All you have to do is edit a line in 
your '/etc/inittab' file. At the beginning of the file, there is a line:
	id:5:initdefault:
just change the 5 to a 3, save the file and reboot. you can still get to 
X bu simply typing:
	'startx'
which will call up your default WM
