I think you will get many answers.

I am employing YDL (and FreeBSD on another box) because there are 
some things I want to explore in terms of languages and emacs 
functions that either have no OSX presence or installing them on OSX 
would be a big pain, involve compromises or not be understood or 
supported by the developers.

For general work, I've found nothing on *nix for my needs that 
doesn't exists better on OSX.
