RPM's?

If I wanted to update programs like MySQL, php, apache, etc... what do I look for in the information to make sure that it will work in YDL? I have been trying to get platform independent linux RPM's, but things don't seem to work the way I want them to. For example - I have tried installing Firefox and it just won't install, it says there is an error and then exits when running rpm.
