installing xfce - dbh ?

Thanks, this worked perfectly...well almost, but now that I am into
xfce, I am having that common dreaded problem: soundcard. It is
recognizing it fine, but i get the horrible screeching and changing the
volume in xfce is doing nothing (although it did in KDE and GNOME).
Unfortunately, I have an imac so simply unplugging the speakers is not
an option.

I wonder if there is an easy to disable the speakers temporarily until
i find a fix.....what file could i edit to do that? Also, does running
the latest yum update really fix the sound issues with 4.0? If so, I
will just run yum in the failsafe terminal and hope for the best?

Any advice is much appreciated...thanks!!!
