Formatting a firewire drive

I have the latest version of YD that has a startup disk for an external
firewire drive. None of the literature from YD addresses the installation.
After I boot holding down the "c" key on my Powerbook I am ask what drive do
I want to format. I then get an error message that a "bootstrap mac"
partition does not exist.

Can some one give me a tutorial on formatting the drive with the
"bootstrap"?
