Can you get to a root prompt in Yellow Dog?  If so, there is some setup program (can't remember the name offhand - but it's in the manual) that will let you re-initialize everything - mouse, Xwindows, and so on.  (It's something easy like "setup").  That worked for us - we also had a problem with the graphics initially, but that program fixed it.
