Hi Andrew:
Packages are added, updated, upgraded and installed (and more) via a  
program known as yum.  You can read more regarding it here:

Also it is available by doing:

$ man yum

or

$ info yum

You'll notice a recommendation for how  the file yum.conf should  
appear.  It is only one possibility as it is possible to have yum.conf  
comprise a listing where more than one server is referenced.  yum will  
refer to whatever number of servers listed within yum.conf  
simultaneously.  A listing of servers which yum repositories (data) are  
here:
