Are you running with an HDMI or Component monitor? Or did you have to modify
your X settings to work with an older monitor? If you must type "startx" from
the command line, then you are likely running in a reduced resolution and
bypassing the log in screen.

You need to edit the /etc/inittab file and modify the runlevel of 3 to 5 in
the first dozen lines, or so.
