Gnome desktop

Hi Weldon:

A quick way around this problem may be to reinstall Gnome by using yum.
Also you may want to review how you setup your system, for instance is there
a separate id for system administrator and user. As a basic review, the
system administrator can add/modify/remove everything in the system; the
user is restricted to using applications only and creating files respective
to those same applications.

Many problems can be avoided if the above distinctions are created during
the installation phase of YDL (or any Linux), including different passwords
for the above designations or modes. It is possible that if this is not
done it is way too easy for anyone to remove Gnome or anything else --
including erasing the entire hard drive -- and create the problem you are
in. A user restricted to using applications (Open Office, Rhythmn, etc.)
would be immediately informed by the Linux operating system that the user
cannot remove Gnome should a user attempt to do so. Again, setting up Linux
so that it behaves this way is best done at the installation phase.

If this is the foundation of the problem, then correcting it doesn't mean
reinstallation. It does mean however a review of System Administrator
procedures (refer to any text on Linux System Administration for a
background discussion) and setting up your user id/password and system
administrator user id/password properly.

What actions or commands caused you to lose Gnome? It would be helpful, in
providing you a more specific reply, if you presented to this list a report
or listing from the history function.

Perhaps after reviewing what occurred it may be possible to avoid those
actions in the future.

All the best...
