Dear Associates of Yellow Dog Linux,

We are pleased to introduce 4 database systems that are fully functional
and available for Yellow Dog Linux Champion Server 1.1: MiniSQL, MySQL,
PostgreSQL, and FrontBase. With PHP as a front-end to MiniSQL, MySQL, and
PostgreSQL, the Champion Server is a powerful online database management
system. And recently made available for Yellow Dog Linux is Frontline
Sofware's "FrontBase" --a scalable, powerful database system in the same
class as DB2 and Oracle.

We have presented in the text below an overview of each of the 4 databases:

MiniSQL
A light weight relational database management system capable of providing
rapid access to your data with very little overhead. mSQL supports some
standard SQL, and some non-standard database calls. It is a good start for
non-mission-critical applications. MiniSQL's main qualities: quick
deployment time, fast with small data sets. Hooks for Perl, PHP, and Java
make MiniSQL a good back-end for a small web database. It is available for
free if used for non-commercial purposes.

MySQL
MySQL supports more of the SQL standard than MiniSQL and of course has a
few of its own extensions. It is also much faster. Because it contains more
features, developing an application in MySQL may require more time.
However, the database is very stable and can take more punishment than
MiniSQL. MySQL's main qualities: fast deployment, able to handle large data
sets, many standard SQL features that are necessary for a powerful database
and hooks for Perl, PHPC, C++, Eiffel, Java, Perl, PHP, Python and TCL. GPL
and other licensed versions are available via their website.

PostgreSQL
The most advanced open-source database managment system available and has
been around since 1985, a testament to its stability and field-tested
endurance. PostgreSQL has hooks for C, C++, TCL, Perl, JBDC, OBDC, Python,
PHP, and more. It has partial support for SQL92 along with its own
extensions to make your life interesting if you ever have to port to
another SQL database. PostgreSQL's focus is primarily on flexibility and
unique features --a bit slower than small databases like MySQL, but offers
a rich feature set. PostgreSQL currently ships with YDL Champion Server and
is available for free from their website.

FrontBase
An industrial-strength, transaction-oriented database server in full
compliance with the SQL 92 standard (most SQL3 datatypes are supported as
well). FrontBase offers robustness, scalability and performance all in a
cost efficient package with a Web deployment license starting at US $699. A
fully functional and networkable version of FrontBase is available for free
but does not offer support nor security checks. FrontBase comes with an
access API library in standard C and includes a Perl driver as well. An
HTML-based Admin tool provides full . A pure Java JDBC driver will be
released in Q4 1999. Drivers for many other popular tools are expected to
be available within the next few months.

Some features of FrontBase 1.2 include:
 - Compliance with the SQL 92 standard
 - Unicode 2.0 support
 - Stringent transaction control
 - 100% resiliency against crashes
 - Super-fast start-up times
 - Tera-byte size databases
 - Giga-byte size CHARACTER strings and BLOBs
 - Multi-column optimized B-tree indexing with very low overhead
 - Host OS file system independency
 - In-memory caching of tables
 - Serializable isolation level with versioned reads
 - Row-level locking facilities
 - Import and Export functionality
 - Row-level privileges

FrontBase 2.0 will be released later in 1999 and offer a range of exciting
new features:
 - Server side cursors
 - Stored procedures and functions
 - Multiple result sets
 - Notification
 - Clusters
