The messages you refer to are:
        errors occured while rotating /var/log/xferlog {

        stat of /var/log/xferlog failed: No such file or directory

The fix is this: edit /etc/logrotate.d/proftpd and add the line 'missingok'.

/var/log/xferlog {
    postrotate
    /usr/bin/killall -HUP in.proftpd
    endscript
    missingok
}

This has just been fixed in CVS.

I don't know what your problem with 'mail' is (q quits), but you have 6
virtual consoles (alt-F1 .. F6) which you can switch to and log in if you
need to kill a process.

You may want to consider using another mail program like 'pine' as well.
