depending on which kernel version you have anything above 2.2.x has ipahcins
built in you just need to make sure the kenel is compiled for its use. open a
terminal and do:

root@scavenger:~# ipchains -nL
Chain input (policy ACCEPT):
target prot opt source destination ports
DENY tcp ------ 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 * -> 515
DENY tcp ------ 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 * -> 6000
Chain forward (policy ACCEPT):
Chain output (policy ACCEPT):
root@scavenger:~#

this is of course a laptop, but you should see this type of output. if you do
not you need to compile it into your kernel. there are tools such ad gtkfqadm
which is a gui firewall builder, check http://www.linuxapps.com for more gui
based apps and www.linuxdoc.org or
http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~dranch/LINUX/TrinityOS/cHTML/TrinityOS-c.html
which is the best for firewall configuration.
