Ah -- I think we have got our wires crossed. My explanation was for
how one can install a precompiled RPM kernel and/or sources (to
satisfy RPM dependencies), while actually using an entirely different
kernel compiled from non-RPM kernel sources. I guess it's been too
long since I've even thought about compiling kernels from RPM source
packages. :)

The only thing that comes to mind is that perhaps the packager used
RPM build tools that are more recent than your version of RPM. But
I've never seen that error before, and am not sure exactly what it
means.
