Well, I'm not there looking at what you're doing. However, if there is
no partition number, then I can't see how the drive retained it's
formatting. You need at least a format at hdb1 (invisible partition)
that tells the OS what is what. If you don't intend to use/mount/see the
drive in MacOS, then this is the only partition that has to be there.

Drive setup will allow you to choose 1 partition, and then it will write
the partition map at hdb1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (these are invisible partitions
in MacOS that tell the OS about the filesystem). You can make the 1
partition (by this Drive Setup means a visible, mountable partition)
Free Space if you want, or make it HFS standard and just delete it in
the YDL formatter. I am assuming this drive will be used in Linux only
when I say the following:
Assuming you created 1 partiton type Free Space (Drive Setup might call
it unallocated, same thing):
Delete all the (normally invisible) partitions Drive Setup created
except for the first one. Without the first one, no OS can tell what to
do with the drive.
At some point you will end up with hda1 and the rest free space.
Create a Linux partition out of the free space.
Save and enter the mountpoint program.
Enter the mountpoint as /home.
Save and reboot.

If you are transferring files, you may need to mount it at something
else ("/newhome"?) until you move the files necessary. You will have to
make sure it is mounted at /home before you reboot, though.
