Thank you, Sean, for the suggestion.
Unfortunately, using these mount command specs. doesn't solve the problem.
I have been hacking around with mtab and fstab, etc., but have had not met
with any luck.
Pls. advise if anyone has any further thoughts.

Try this:
mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom
By specifying the fs type and the rw capability, you've eliminated the
computers' guess work.
