If you're in either of those, it's too late. Xpmac is an X
server, i.e., started before a window manager.

That's not how it's done. /etc/X11/X has to be a symlink to
/ust/X11R6/bin/Xpmac.
The only reason I'm suggesting Xpmac is because with it as your
X server, you specify what you want to use for your mouse
buttons via .xserverrc; with XF68_FBDev, the mouse buttons are
normally specified via BootX, but, since you're not running
BootX, you, presumeably, have to specify them via yaboot: I'm
not using yaboot so I can't help there.
