proftpd works sluggishly?

I've got YDL running on my Wallstreet G3 powerbook (300MHz, 192MB RAM).
I set up proftpd to start up in xinetd.d. I've also got atalkd set up.
When I connect with AppleShare , everything works fine, just as it
would on a MacOS with FileSharing. When I connect via FTP (using Fetch)
each command takes forever to go through. Is there something else I
need to set up?
