There are many reasons one may both "care or need to know" their dynamic IP address. The assumtion that one does not "care or need to know" their IP just because it is dynamic is incorrect. As one of the previous posters has already mentioned, ifconfig can be used to determine what your IP address is. This program most likely resides in /sbin and thus is normally not in a normal user's path. However, if you are only looking for the IP address, it can normally be executed by a normal user via /sbin/ifconfig (that is of course if it's in /sbin).
