Those updates aren't yup-able becasue they're not in a yup-ified archive.
Just go to the KDE site, pick a download mirror, grab them all and then
you should be able to rpm -Uvh *.rpm. kpackage and gnorpm should be able
to give you a graphical frontend to the package interface as well if
that's your bag.

Would it be possible to have a yup-ified /contrib that mirrors
ximian, kde and other nice places so updates would be easier?

Hit the YDL archives at http://lists.yellowdoglinux.com for Yup help.
There have been a lot of question and answers about fixing yup not working
issues. Normally it means go to /var/cache/yup/ and rm -rf * then run
"yup config dist" this is only one of many possible solutions, but it's
what worked for me.
