I fixed my crash. I'd installed CUPS in an attempt to get printing
working, and something was very, very wrong with the installation. Since
cups was being launched at startup, the system crashed every time. So, I
went into interactive startup, and didn't start it. Then I deleted the
startup file from rc3.d

I still don't have printing, but I'm back to where I was.

As for sound, I use Ximian GNOME. In Ximian GNOME, you should start the
sound server, because it works. Part of my problem before was bad mp3
files...

Anyhow, I'm functioning again. Thanks.
